Houston Dynamo FC falls on penalties to Detroit City FC

HOUSTON (May 7, 2024) – Lamar Hunt US Open Cup reigning Champion Houston Dynamo FC bowed out of the tournament tonight, losing 10-9 on penalties in the round of 16 to Detroit City FC.

Houston and Detroit tied it three goals apiece in regulation, followed by a scoreless overtime that then saw the shots on goal come down to goaltender attempts.

Houston opened the scoring in the sixth minute after captain Héctor Herrera corner delivered to the first post found the feet of a charging Griffin Dorsey, who guided the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The play marked Dorsey’s second goal of the year and Herrera’s first assist.

Midfielder Blessing Latif scored his first goal for Houston in the 31st minute after an early pass from Herrera for the striker Gabe Segalwho quickly got the ball to Blessing.

Detroit found the back of the net in the 41stst minute when Ryan Williams hit a ball well outside the box which gave the goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell no chance of saving.

Detroit tied the score at two goals apiece in 75th minute thanks to a low shot from Yazeed Matthews which found the far bottom corner.

Houston responded quickly, as midfielder Adalberto “Coco” Carrasquilla scored two minutes later, cutting to the left and sending the ball into the far corner from outside the penalty area.

However, Detroit fought back again, with Devon Amoo-Mensah finding the back of the net in the 83rd minute.rd minute to bring the match level again and force overtime.

Houston finishes the week by returning to MLS play with a road trip to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, May 12, followed by a midweek road trip to in-state rival Austin FC on Wednesday, May 15 .
