During the shooting, Drake and Lamar’s feud took on a “life of its own”: Jason Lee

(NewsNation) — A security guard was shot and killed outside Drake’s Toronto mansion on Tuesday, according to police. This came after weeks of hostile back and forth between the Canadian star and rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Jason Lee, founder of Hollywood Unlocked, said Tuesday that he had yet to hear anyone “claim that the shooting in Canada was directly related to the sharing of dissident songs.”

“Hip-hop is based on the ability to exchange lyrics that can be pretty hard sometimes,” Lee said during an appearance on “Banfield.” “I don’t see it as a continuation of sharing songs.

“Sometimes music or rap lyrics that are driven by this back-and-forth creativity that I would call art takes on a life of its own where people in the community jump in and try to take it over for themselves take. “Lee added.

Lee wants to make sure that “we’re not fanning flames that get people to buy into something that’s in the music and then turns into something.”

Toronto Police Operations said they responded to a shooting in the area of Bayview Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East around 2:09 a.m. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police say they have video of the shooting but are not currently providing a description of the suspect or getaway vehicle, Inspector Paul Krawczyk of Toronto’s Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force said in a news conference.

Krawczyk said police “cannot provide a motive at this time” and could not confirm whether Drake was home at the time of the shooting.

Police remain on the scene as officers comb the neighborhood, talk to witnesses and search for additional video footage, Krawczyk said.

The area where the shooting occurred is known as The Bridle Path, an upscale neighborhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada consisting of multi-million dollar mansions.
