A man who tried to act as a peacemaker during a dispute between several people was shot in the neck in Monrovia on Sunday evening, June 2, an investigator said.

Investigators have not yet succeeded in identifying the shooter.

The shooting occurred in the 700 block of West Duarte Road, near a car wash, and was reported to police shortly before 9:30 p.m.

There was an argument between two homeless people who apparently lived in the Wash below Duarte and people from the neighborhood, said Sheriff’s Lt. Steve De Jong, adding that detectives were told a fight was about to break out. He did not yet know what sparked the argument.

According to De Jong, investigators had preliminary information that the victim, who lived nearby, tried to intervene and calm everyone down.

Shots were fired and the homeless people ran away. The police and a helicopter found one of the men, the detective said.
