Founder of Drag Queen Story Hour UK Victim of homophobic attack

Sebastian Samuel, co-founder of the Drag Queen Story Hour in the UK, was attacked along with his partner in Cardiff, Wales early on Sunday morning by men who shouted homophobic abuse at them.

Samuel had proposed to his boyfriend just a few hours earlier. PinkNews Reports. When the two walked past a McDonald’s around 3 a.m., two men insulted them, he said. He asked them why they were doing this and the men began beating the couple. Samuel became unconscious and suffered a broken jaw, which required surgery.

“This is the night of my anniversary, it’s the night I proposed to my boyfriend and I’m here crying,” he said PinkNews. “It’s not fair, it’s not fair.”

In a Facebook Live video, Samuel said of his injuries: “This is my engagement gift from the world. I have a swollen cheek and a slightly black eye.”

He also feared he had lost the engagement ring he had given to his now fiancée, but found it when he returned to the scene. “I spent about two hours on my knees looking for it because I refuse to lose the ring I gave him,” he said.

South Wales Police are investigating the attack as a hate crime, it said PinkNewsThe investigation is a priority, they said, noting that there is “no place in society” for such attacks.

Samuel, who performs as drag queen Aida H Dee, has some events planned despite the attack. There will be a new series of Drag Queen Story Hours at Regent’s Park in London on July 7 and 14, and he is looking forward to returning as Aida, he said in social media posts on Monday. He said the shows should not be “overshadowed by hate.”

Earlier this month, a Liverpool venue canceled a story time with Samuel after the artist received several threats. “A message threatened to cut me into pieces and throw me in the river,” he told city officials. echo newspaper at the time.
