The incident occurred at The Stand on South Montowese Street around 11:30 p.m. on May 17

Police said they were sent there at the request of management over a dispute with a customer.

They said Massey was told by management to leave the company but he refused.

They posted surveillance photos of the incident on social media:

While an acquaintance of Massey’s was being arrested by officers, police said Massey assaulted one of their officers by punching him multiple times in the back of the head and neck.

Another officer and an employee took Massey to the ground, where he continued to struggle. Police said he continued to resist while handcuffed.

While the officers tried to get Massey off the ground, the suspect punched one of them in the face and fell to the ground, taking the other officer with him.

Massey had the officer in a leg hold. Additional officers arrived on the scene and gave Massey several commands to let go of the officer. They said Massey attempted to bite them, tighten his leg hold and roll on top of the officer he had in his grasp.

Massey was then punched by officers to get him to go, police said.

After being released, Massey officers backed away and a Taser was drawn. However, they said this was not necessary as Massey decided to resign at that point.

Massey refused medical treatment and was later released on bail.

The first two officers involved in the incident were taken to hospital for minor injuries.

Branford police said they are investigating the use of force against Massey in accordance with policy.
