Family members speak out after man struck and killed by impaired driver – WSOC TV

CONCORD, N.C. — Family members are mourning the loss of a loved one after he was struck and killed by an impaired driver.

According to Concord police, 35-year-old John Stevenson was struck while walking home on Davidson Highway Friday afternoon. He was just a few steps from his back door when he was hit.

According to officials, the driver who hit him, 41-year-old David Royce Brown, was arrested and charged with habitual impaired driving and second-degree murder.

Stevenson’s family told veteran crime reporter Glenn Counts that he had just gotten off work and was on his way home when the incident occurred. They believe Brown shouldn’t have been on the streets given his criminal record.

“It’s a flawed system, which is why my brother is no longer here,” said Damon Brooks, Stevenson’s brother. “How can you be walking on the side of the road at 1:27 p.m. in the middle of the day and be hit by a drunk driver?”

In North Carolina, the law states that to receive a charge, a person must have been convicted of driving three times in the last 10 years.

Demyra Jackson is the victim’s niece and says she was very close to her uncle. She told Counts the incident had a devastating impact on her family.

“He took away a son, a father, an uncle, a brother, and those are just a few things my uncle meant to all of us,” Jackson said.

Brown is currently being held at the Cabarrus County Jail without bail. Jackson says she hopes the system doesn’t go easy on Brown.

“Do we want to let him out so he can do this again?” He must remain in prison forever,” she said.
