Deputies: Man killed in car crash near Watervliet

KEELER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say the driver of a 1957 Chevy Bel Air was killed in a car accident near Watervliet.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report of an accident on 84th Avenue in Keeler Township on Monday around 6:30 p.m.

According to a news release, investigators believe the car was traveling westbound when the driver lost control due to flooding on the gravel road and crashed into a tree.

The sheriff’s office said the 1957 Chevy Bel Air had no air bags or seat belts. It also said there was “a very aggressive dog” in the vehicle, which made it difficult for first responders to reach the driver.

According to the sheriff’s office, the driver died from his injuries. His name has not been released.

The dog was unharmed and was returned to family members by Van Buren County Animal Control, the release said.
