NOW meteorologist GRIFFIN HARDY is here taking a look at our forecast. GRIFFIN, it was a beautiful Saturday out there. OH, IT REALLY HAS. YES. LOTS OF SUNSHINE. And we had clear skies last night, which meant we were able to see the Northern Lights last night. GREAT. IT WAS AMAZING. IT WAS REALLY. OH ABSOLUTELY. And we have another chance to see it tonight because since skies will be clear, once we get those clouds out of the way it will be partly to mostly cloudy for part of the evening tonight. BUT I think after 11:00 the sky will clear. That’s due to a weak cold front moving through, er, clear skies across much of the hinterland. Partly cloudy skies over western North Carolina. Here’s a look at it. PARIS MOUNTAIN SKY CAM. LOTS OF SUNSHINE OVER GREENVILLE, 73 DEGREES. OH man, it feels really good. Humidity is lower, much lower than earlier this week. YOU KNOW, WE HAVE SEEN HIGHER 80S AND GOT CLOSER TO 90 DEGREES THIS WEEK. But then a front came through and another weaker front is coming tonight. SO COOL TEMPERATURES ARE 73° IN GREENVILLE AND SPARTANBURG AS WELL AS GAFFNEY 75° IN CLEMSON AND ANDERSON, LOW 70° IN ASHEVILLE AND HENDERSONVILLE. There are even a few 1960s-era guests in Cullowhee and Franklin. HERE IS THE 12 HOUR FORECAST. It cannot be ruled out that an isolated shower will form along this weak cold front, but the chance will be low, otherwise it is 20%. Clear skies this evening. Hopefully we get another shot of these wonderful northern lights. It really is exceptionally rare to see something like this. SO, UM, REALLY ENJOY IT IF YOU CAN SEE IT FOR SURE. The same is true in western North Carolina. The chance of a scattered shower this evening is very slim. OTHERWISE THE REST OF THE NIGHT WILL BE MOSTLY CLEAR and tomorrow morning will be cool with lows in the upper 40s in the mountains. IT WILL BE BEAUTIFUL. TOMORROW THERE WILL BE A BIT OF CLOUD FROM MONDAY. From Monday evening there will be mostly showers. THEN WE HAVE A CHANCE FOR STORMS ON TUESDAY AND THEN MORE CLEAR WEATHER WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. ALL YOUR FOUR DAYS PLUS IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. GRIFFIN THANK YOU VERY MUCH. So here’s what we’re talking about. Last night, people in Carolina and Georgia saw a breathtaking display in the sky. THANKS TO THE GEOMAGNETIC STORM. ROB KIRKPATRICK HAS MORE FOR PEOPLE ACROSS NORTH AMERICA THIS WEEKEND. GET A RARE VIEW OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, THANKS TO A STRONG GEO-MAGNETIC STORM. Later Saturday, northern lights could be seen as far away as Alabama. This is announced by the Space Weather Prediction Center of the NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION. The key will be earlier in the evening. The peak time tonight will really be with the time frame increasing by 5-8 and 8-11. SOLAR ACTIVITY CAUSES AURORA TO DANCE AROUND THE POLES OF THE EARTH, KNOWN AS THE NORTHERN LIGHTS OR AURORA BOREALIS, INSIDE THE EARTH. IS THE BUILDING OF MELTED IRON AND NICKEL, AND IT CREATES THIS MAGNETIC FIELD THAT ALLOWS YOUR COMPASS TO WORK. And that’s what causes the charged particles to come down at the North and South Poles. AND IT IS THE SPEED OF THE PARTICLES PASSING THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE THAT CREATES THE AURORA. The storm could affect the power grid as well as satellite and high-frequency radio communications. The Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday evening monitored conditions of an extreme geomagnetic storm reaching a severity level of five out of five, not recorded since 2003. The particular sunspot we are now looking closely at is actually 51 times the size of THE EARTH. So it’s huge. We are watching these eruptions. We recognize that we will have an impact on the Earth. THIS ALLOWED US TO TAKE CARE OF THE POWER GRID AND OTHER TECHNOLOGY OWNERS AND OPERATORS. THE INCREASED SOLAR ACTIVITY BRINGS A BRILLIANT, COLORED LIGHT PLAY TO AMERICANS EVERYWHERE. I’M ROB KIRKPATRICK REPORTING. SO COOL. Well, today cool kids in Anderson County also have a chance to take to the skies. VOLUNTEER PILOTS FROM THE ANDERSON AVIATION ASSOCIATION HAVE HELPED SOME CHILDREN EXPERIENCE THEIR FIRST FLIGHT. We’re told the goal is to instill a love of aviation in the kids and raise awareness of Anderson Regional Airport. THE ANDERSON AVIATION ASSOCIATION HAS ABOUT 77 MEMBERS. Um, so we have a great community that has formed in Anderson. MOST PILOTS ARE FROM ANDERSON, BUT SOME ARE FROM OCONEE, UM, PICKENS AND GREENWOOD COUNTY OFFICI
