UPDATE: Lake Winnie employee injured in ride accident released from hospital | Local news

TO UPDATE: Lake Winnepesaukah posted an update on social media about the employee injured in the Wave Swinger incident. They say the employee has been released from the hospital and plans to return to work at the amusement park.

The article goes on to say that there was no disruption to the journey at the time of the accident.

“The State of Georgia conducts annual inspections of our park and similar facilities in the state. In order for a facility to open and operate, any problems identified must be corrected prior to operation.”

Local 3 News previously reported that a 2023 inspection at the Wave Swinger found a seating violation.

PREVIOUS STORY: Local 3 News has obtained updated inspection reports on Lake Winnie from the Georgia Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire.

The inspection report shows that there were seating violations during the Wave Swinger ride in October 2023.

The inspectors wrote that the torn seat covers needed to be replaced, but there is no record of whether this was fixed.

The inspection also shows that the ride was manufactured in 1974 and has 48 seats for children.

A Catoosa County spokesman said the 16-year-old employee attempted to lock and secure a seat.

Before she could get off, the ride turned on and she was thrown out.

“We noticed that the swings were like stopped,” said Mandy White, who was at the park at the time. “So we just assumed the ride was stuck.”

When rescue workers arrived, they found that the teenager had crashed into a concrete pillar from the Wave Swinger and fallen into the lake.

“She was really trying to take care of a guest there and close the latch of the ride, and as soon as she started doing that, the ride started,” John Pless said.

We reached out to the park for a comment and they confirmed that the incident occurred on the Wave Swinger ride and no one else was injured.

“We really hope that the young lady recovers quickly. She was just doing her job,” said Pless.

Pless says the teenager was taken to Children’s Hospital for treatment.

The theme park states that no guests were affected.

This is not the first incident at Lake Winnie. In 2023, a 5-year-old was hospitalized after falling down a water slide.

Following this incident, a records request revealed that Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park’s inspection reports listed a total of eight violations over the past three years.
