Artist Donald Billinkoff Launches First Solo Exhibition at Age 74 at Atlanta’s 72 Gallery – WABE

Writer and activist Betty Friedan once said, “Aging is not ‘lost youth,’ but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” At 74, self-taught artist Donald Billinkoff seized that opportunity by presenting his first solo exhibition. The once-acclaimed architect has now devoted himself to art full-time.

Billinkoff took the time to join Lois Reitzes on “City Lights” to discuss her first solo exhibition and her journey from architect to artist this week.

Early on, Billinkoff made a conscious decision to pursue architecture: “I actually think the artist part of me was there before architecture,” he said, “however, looking at it from a pragmatic point of view, being an architect seems like a much more stable way of life.”

As he grew older and began to be interested in art again, he decided to continue to challenge himself, while trying to live each day to the fullest.

“I didn’t intend to give up the pleasure of creating and spending free time with my grandchildren and friends, but I still wanted a challenge and this exhibition became a real goal. I can’t say it was stress-free, but I tried with all my might to acknowledge that I am 74 years old,” he said. “I am healthy. I should enjoy life.”

His exhibition “Art Alchemy” is on display at Galerie 72 until July 26.
