Arizona girl arrested after fatal accident and charged with manslaughter

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, a 19-year-old girl was arrested Monday on suspicion of manslaughter and four counts of aggravated assault after a car crash left one person dead and four others injured.

At about 8:30 p.m. Friday, Madison Carey was driving westbound on Pinnacle Peak Road near North 56th Street when her car went off the road, court documents say. Carey overcorrected and entered the eastbound lane of the roadway, causing a head-on collision with another car carrying five people, documents say.

According to court documents, both cars came to an abrupt stop, spun out and caught fire. A passenger in the other car died after being taken to the hospital, and Carey suffered a broken ankle.

According to court documents, police spoke to three witnesses who said they saw Carey’s car cross into oncoming traffic, causing the crash. One witness said the car skidded before the crash, while another said it was traveling at about 25 mph in a zone with a 45 mph speed limit, the documents say.

Another passenger was seriously injured, his legs were paralyzed and he had to undergo several surgeries, court documents say. A third passenger required immediate surgery and was taken to intensive care, while the last two passengers suffered multiple broken bones.

According to court documents, police found two identification cards in Carey’s possession, one with her real name and birth date and one with a false birth date identifying her as over 21 years old. Carey was 19 at the time of the incident.

A preliminary breathalyzer test on Carey showed a reading of 0.146 percent, according to court documents. The legal limit for blood alcohol content is 0.08 percent.
