SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A French court has ruled that a San Francisco Bay Area man accused of raping a woman on the campus of Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania in 2013 can be extradited to the United States.

Ian Cleary, 31, of Saratoga, has been in custody since April.

According to investigators, he stalked the victim at a party, followed her to her dorm and then sexually abused her.

Ian Thomas Cleary, a Bay Area native who admitted to a 2013 rape via Facebook message, was captured in France, authorities said.

They reopened the case in 2020 when the victim received several messages that appeared to be from Cleary, including one that said, “So, I raped you.”

It is unclear when Cleary will be returned to the United States.

He has refused extradition, which will slow down the process.
