ATM robber arrested, Terrebonne Parish sheriff reports

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet said Gilbert Sidney Matthews, 27, and Jermonte Emeeko Hamilton, 23, were arrested on charges of first-degree robbery.

NEW ORLEANS – Two Breaux Bridge men suspected of robbing an ATM while a mechanic was servicing it are now in the custody of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office on multimillion-dollar bail.

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Tim Soignet announced that during the course of the investigation lasting several weeks, Gilbert Sidney Matthews (27) and Jermonte Emeeko Hamilton (23) were arrested on suspicion of aggravated robbery.

“On Monday, June 24th, shortly after 8:00 p.m., the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division was called to a local bank in the 100 block of West Main Street after reports of an armed robbery that had occurred at that location,” Sheriff Soignet said in a press release sent Tuesday.

“When officers arrived on scene, they made contact with a male victim who identified himself as an ATM mechanic. Officers quickly determined that two masked suspects approached the mechanic as he was repairing the ATM and demanded money and threatened his life with a firearm. The suspects then forcibly removed several components of the ATM and fled the scene in a vehicle.”

The sheriff said detectives from the TPSO’s Violent Crimes Unit were called in to further investigate and that based on the evidence collected, they located the vehicle used in the robbery as well as several defective parts of the ATM, which led to the arrests.

On July 2, Matthews was taken into custody and remains incarcerated at the Criminal Justice Complex with bail set at $5,000,000.00.

Hamilton was also taken into custody by the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office where he was held on $3,000,000.00 bail.
