Date and rules for Ryan Garcia’s reinstatement after Haney Fight suspension announced

Ryan Garcia will serve a one-year suspension after reaching an agreement with the New York State Athletic Commission regarding his positive drug tests prior to his fight against Devin Haney.

ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported that Garcia will forfeit his disclosed $1.2 million prize money. Garcia will be eligible to return to office on April 20, 2025, provided he passes a drug test.

“The Commission will continue to demand the highest professional standards from athletes and protect the integrity of all sports under our jurisdiction,” the NYSAC said in a statement.

The decision comes after 25-year-old Garcia announced his retirement on social media on Wednesday.

Garcia defeated Haney by majority decision in April. The victory was considered a major upset and gave Haney the first loss of his professional career. The result was overturned and will be considered a no-round in both fighters’ records.

“I want to thank the commission and the fans who stood by me throughout the process,” Haney told Coppinger. “Facts are facts and I was not given an equal opportunity. I’m glad I was able to get justice for what happened. This is all part of my story and will only make me better. I look forward to enjoying this time with my family and friends and seeing what’s next.”

“I am a clean athlete and boxing is a brutal sport where one fight can literally change your life. I think it’s important for fighters to be clean and I want to become an advocate for clean athletes because of my experiences in this situation.”

Garcia has vehemently denied intentionally taking performance-enhancing drugs, and his representatives released a statement saying the fight will “never be erased” despite being removed from the record books.

“Ryan and his legal team have resolved this issue and are sticking to the truth: he never intentionally ingested any banned substances,” Team Garcia said in a statement to ESPN. “It’s simply not in his nature. … Fans will always remember his performance against Haney as a masterpiece, and that will never be erased.”

Haney remains the WBC junior welterweight champion and also holds the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO and The ring Lightweight title. He has not yet announced his next fight.
