Six people arrested in Portal for attempting to illegally cross the US-Canadian border

NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — As a holiday like the Fourth of July approaches, we often forget that crime is still at an all-time high.

In fact, according to Northeastern University’s database of mass killings, July 4 is considered the most violent day of the year. And on this Fourth of July, the U.S. Border Patrol remained vigilant to keep our borders safe and secure.

According to Swanson Sector agents, approximately 7,000 migrants attempted to illegally cross the U.S.-Canadian border in 2023.

And this year, there was a 114% increase in encounters with illegal immigrants; from January to April, about 4,772 people attempted to cross the border illegally.

But thanks to the help of agents at the portal entrance, six people were arrested on July 4 while attempting to illegally enter the United States and charged with illegal entry.

The Grand Forks Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol has since recognized the work of these officers, saying, “Great job by our Portal and ND agents! … No matter what day it is, our agents always keep an eye on it!”

If you are traveling from another country and wish to enter the United States, consult the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website at cbp.gov to enter legally.
