Connecticut man killed in boating accident in Vermont

According to Vermont state authorities, the accident occurred after the boat the Wolcott man was on struck something underwater, throwing him and another person into the water.

WILMINGTON, Vermont – A Wolcott man has died after the boat he was on in Vermont over the weekend crashed, authorities said.

At around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Wilmington, Vermont police received a report that a child may have fallen into Harriman Reservoir. Additional reports were also received of a sunken boat with several people on board.

Wilmington police and firefighters searched several locations along the Harriman Reservoir to locate the boat in distress. When rescuers arrived at the scene, there were additional reports of a boat collision that left two people in the water, one of whom was unconscious.

According to police, nearby recreational boaters helped locate the two people in the water and brought them to the Mountain Mills East Recreation Area.

Rescuers performed CPR and other life-saving measures at the Deerfield Valley Rescue boat ramp. One of the victims, 67-year-old Thomas Centinaro, was transported by rescuers to a landing zone and intercepted by Life Star. However, officials said Centinaro’s death was determined at the landing zone.

The Vermont Office of the Chief Medical Examiner also contacted Wilmington Police to assist in the investigation and provide the cause of death.

During the investigation, police learned that Centerino and another person had been thrown from a 1984 Ebbtide Montego 170 powerboat. The boat went out of control after hitting a “submerged obstruction,” officials said.

Wilmington Police received assistance from High Country Marina, Fish and Wildlife Service, Vermont State Police, Windham County Sheriff’s Office, Wilmington and Whitingham fire departments, Dover Police, LifeStar and Deerfield Valley Rescue.

The cause of death is still under investigation.
