  • The driver, a 22-year-old, and two passengers, aged 19 and 20, were pronounced dead at the scene. Another 22-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
  • The city of Milwaukee has struggled with reckless driving problems for years

According to MPD, the car was traveling east on Oklahoma at a high rate of speed. The driver then lost control of the car and collided with two parked cars.

The 22-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Two passengers, aged 19 and 20, were also pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

A third passenger, a 22-year-old, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

City councilor Peter Burgelis said he believed the police were unable to adequately protect the area.

“Unfortunately, the Milwaukee Police Department was unable to allocate sufficient resources from the 6th Precinct to adequately police the area. The 11th Precinct covers a deployment zone of approximately 42,000 residents. This ONE squad zone per 42,000 residents is clearly less protection than the residents deserve!

“Can you imagine West Allis or Wauwatosa having one or two police officers protecting them? Even though the 11th Precinct has the lowest crime rate in the entire city, reckless driving and public safety remain a problem, as it is throughout the city. The Southwest Side pays far too much in property taxes to have far too little police protection. We must continue to look at every possible area of improvement to combat reckless driving and keep our communities safe. Our residents deserve this,” Burgelis wrote in a statement.

In November of last year, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed a resolution to combat reckless driving. It followed a law signed by Governor Tony Evers in May 2023 that increased fines for reckless driving and subsequent offenses. Under the law, the maximum fine for a first offense is $400; the maximum for a second offense is $1,000.

Reckless driving has been a problem in Milwaukee in recent years. In April 2024, a 4-year-old was killed and her 27-year-old mother was injured after a man struck them while crossing the street. The man fled the scene of the accident and is now facing charges.

Police said the investigation into Thursday’s crash is ongoing and that anyone with information should call MPD at (414) 935-7360. To remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips or P3 Tips.
