Woman Killed in Augusta Medical District, Suspect Found Dead

A woman and a suspected gunman are dead after a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the Augusta Medical District.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, Richmond County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting at the intersection of Druid Park Avenue and Walton Way just after 1:30 p.m.

A woman, who has not yet been identified, was shot at least once and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release from the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.

About an hour after the shooting, at 2:35 p.m., officers found the suspected shooter’s vehicle in Pendleton King Park, according to the sheriff’s office. A man was found dead behind the wheel of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.

Witnesses provide more details about the shooting

Corey Gray, a witness at the scene, said he was meeting a friend at Wendy’s when he heard eight or nine gunshots on the adjacent street.

“When I heard the shots, I stood up and looked,” Gray said. “(The woman who was) driving the car leaned back toward the driver’s door and attempted to jump out of the car.”

According to Gray, her car struck the rear of another vehicle approaching the intersection.

“Officers found the body exactly where it fell, approximately three to five feet from the car,” he said.

Gray said the gunman, who was driving a black Impala, did not stop after the first drive past.

“He turned around the block and shot her four or five more times,” he said. “I hid behind a booth (at Wendy’s) to make sure it didn’t get me.”

Gray and three other men ran into the street to see if they could help, but he said she was already dead.

“I thought, ‘Ma’am, do you need help? Ma’am, do you need help? Please, do you need help?’” he said. “One of the men tried to park her car and see if she had identification, but by the time the police and everyone arrived, she was already dead. We saw her take her last breath.”

Gray said the woman appeared to be in her early or late 30s and was wearing dark scrubs. He noted that it appeared she had been shot in the chest.

“That (explicit) made my heart beat so hard,” he said. “I just moved here from Detroit a few years ago and I haven’t seen anything this bad since I left.”

The woman’s car was towed and a worker removed blood from the road.
