Jeremy Renner lands first film role since snowplow accident

By Movieguide® Contributor

Jeremy Renner has landed his first film role since his snowplow accident in early 2023.

Although the actor appeared in the reality TV series “RENNERVATIONS” and the drama series “MAYOR OF KINGSTOWN,” Renner has not yet appeared in a film.

Now, however, he is set to star alongside “Daniel Craig in Rian Johnson’s Netflix sequel KNIVES OUT 3.” Renner joins previously confirmed cast members Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny in the upcoming film titled WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY. Writer and director Johnson is a producer, as is Ram Bergman,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

WAKE UP DEAD MAN: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY is set to hit Netflix “sometime in 2025,” according to a teaser trailer shared by Johnson on Instagram.

The writer and director captioned the video, “We’re about to start production and I’M A LITTLE EXCITED.”

The original KNIVES OUT was released in 2019 and grossed “over $310 million at the box office worldwide.”

A synopsis of the film states: “The circumstances surrounding the death of crime writer Harlan Thrombey are mysterious, but renowned detective Benoit Blanc knows one thing for sure: everyone in the dysfunctional Thrombey family is a suspect. Now Blanc must sift through a web of lies and diversions to uncover the truth.”

The Movieguide® review of the film states, among other things:

KNIVES OUT is a mystery comedy about a rich man, his greedy family, his nurse, and his mysterious death. Harlan Thrombey has built his empire by writing crime novels and publishing them through his own company. A son takes over the publishing business, while his daughter takes a million-dollar loan from Harlan and starts her own real estate company. As he grew older and his health declined, Harlan hired a young nurse named Marta to care for him and keep him company. But when his apparent suicide justifies the hiring of a private investigator, chaos erupts in his family’s search for the truth.

KNIVES OUT is a surprisingly successful black comedy with an all-star cast that delivers on its promises. The humor is intelligent and the story keeps viewers guessing with many unexpected twists. The moral of the story is surprisingly positive, with key themes such as the importance of the truth and doing the right thing even when it doesn’t benefit you. However, KNIVES OUT contains a lot of swear words, some offensive content and brief marijuana use. MOVIEGUIDE® therefore advises extreme caution.

The sequel GLASS ONION was released in 2022. The review from Movieguide® states:

GLASS ONION is the sequel to KNIVES OUT and follows famous Southern detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he searches for a new case. When a mysterious wooden puzzle box appears on his doorstep, Blanc finds an invitation to a party and travels to Greece. The exclusive party is a murder mystery at the home of billionaire Miles Bron. Blanc arrives on the island with a diverse group of characters to take part in Bron’s carefully planned murder mystery. Upon arrival, however, Blanc learns that he was never invited to the party. Bron welcomes him anyway and the mystery is revealed.

GLASS ONION is a masterfully crafted crime thriller that keeps the audience guessing with each layer that is peeled back. The performances are gripping, led by Craig’s hilarious performance. The film draws on the cliches of classic crime, detective novels, games and movies, but also tells a fresh and inspired story that is sure to captivate and engage viewers. Despite the gripping execution, Movieguide® strongly advises caution for younger viewers due to foul language, violence and some suggestive elements.
