MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Monday has been declared First Alert Day because the threat of severe thunderstorms has increased slightly. The reason for this is because the timing of our system has shifted slightly so that most activity is now occurring a little later in the day when there is more energy in the atmosphere.

Keep an eye on the weather late afternoon and evening as strong storms can bring gusty winds and large hail. Our tornado threat isn’t too impressive, but we’ll be watching for rapid rotation of these storms.

What’s next …

This morning will become increasingly cloudy, with a few showers and thunderstorms developing before midday. Temperatures will reach the upper 25 degrees, with a southerly breeze. Thunderstorms will become more frequent during the afternoon and evening. By 10pm most of the activity should be further east of us, and overnight it will be largely quiet.

Temperatures will remain very mild overnight thanks to the cloud cover, meaning that temperatures will still be around 18 degrees on Tuesday morning. Highs will mostly be just over 25 degrees. Most of the daytime hours on Tuesday look dry, and our next storm is slowly approaching from the west. The probability of storms will increase during the evening and night.

Looking ahead…

Some showers may linger into Wednesday, but most of the day should be dry and there is a chance of some sunshine. Temperatures will cool slightly towards the end of the week, with highs dropping to 21-25 degrees. Although isolated showers cannot be ruled out, the second half of the week looks much drier and sunnier. However, we are likely to see increasing wind speeds with gusts around 30 mph on Thursday and Friday.
