Hartford man arrested by police and FBI on child pornography charges

HARTFORD, Connecticut — Hartford police say local police and the FBI arrested a man on child pornography charges Tuesday.

Marvyn Escobar, 26, of Hartford, is charged with violating federal laws, including distributing obscene material to a minor and receiving child pornography.

According to police, an investigation into Escobar for “child pornography offenses” was launched in December 2023 by the Hartford Police Department’s Special Investigations Division in collaboration with the FBI’s Crimes Against Children/Human Trafficking Task Force.

According to a federal affidavit, Escobar was arrested in 2020 for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old, but pleaded guilty to endangering a minor in 2023 and received a 5-year suspended sentence. The affidavit also states that the day before his 2023 sentencing, he began communicating with another 13-year-old in California using the online chat service Discord.

Investigators say Escobar soon began sending the child pornographic images and manipulated her into sending nude pictures of herself, causing her to consider suicide. When her mother found out, she informed police in California, and a multi-agency investigation began.

After investigators found reasonable suspicion to charge Escobar with child pornography violations, a federal judge issued an arrest warrant on June 21, according to police.

Escobar was taken into custody by Special Investigations Agency investigators and task force agents on June 25, later charged and taken into federal custody, police said.
