Elmhurst Portillo closed ‘until further notice’ following domestic incident involving a knife – NBC Chicago

A popular suburban shopping center was closed and some streets blocked early Wednesday morning during an hours-long standoff outside a Portillo’s restaurant in Elmhurst, police said.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a domestic incident call at a Portillo’s restaurant at 155 S. IL Route 83, police said in a news release. While the restaurant was closed at the time of the call, a cleaning team consisting of two women and one man was inside, according to the release.

Upon arrival, officers determined that a 32-year-old male subcontractor was involved in the incident with a knife. According to police, the man, who had a domestic relationship with one of the women, began attacking his partner with two large knives.

The victim and the other woman were able to escape the building and ask for help from a passing motorist who called 911, the statement said.

According to the news release, police attempted to make contact with the suspect inside, but he did not respond to verbal or telephone communications. At approximately 8:30 a.m., Elmhurst police and officers from the DuPage Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigations Team entered the restaurant and located the suspect with a self-inflicted injury. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, police said.

The female victim suffered a minor injury in the attack, police added.

The Elmhurst Crossing shopping center was closed in the early hours of the morning as part of the investigation. According to police, it reopened around 9:30 a.m.

Evidence technicians remain at the restaurant, which will remain closed “until further notice,” Portillo’s said in a statement to NBC Chicago.

“The safety of our team members and guests is our top priority,” the statement continued.

Photos and videos from the scene show multiple police cars and officers outside the restaurant, while the building is surrounded by yellow police tape.

According to police, the suspect remains in the custody of the Elmhurst Police Department while he receives medical attention and the incident remains under investigation.
