SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield Assistant Police Chief Rupert Daniel, who served the city for more than 37 years, is retiring.

According to the Springfield Police Department, Deputy Chief Daniel became a Springfield officer in 1986 and served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. In 2019, Daniel became Springfield’s first Black police officer to achieve the rank of assistant police chief.


Daniel served as a member of the US Army Special Forces during the tragic events of September 11th. He retired from the US Army as a Green Beret in 2019. He completed two combat tours in Afghanistan, a combat tour in Iraq and a combat support tour in the Persian Gulf. He was honored with, among other things, the Bronze Star.

He is expected to retire on Thursday.
