Cardinals starter Lance Lynn had his strongest performance since early May, but the weather meant he couldn’t celebrate a win, at least not on Tuesday night.

Lynn held the Baltimore Orioles to one unearned run in six innings, striking out five of them and allowing just two hits and no walks before officials called a halt to the game with the score tied 1-1 in the middle of the sixth inning at Busch Stadium.

The teams will complete play on Wednesday and will also play the third and final game of their only series against each other this season.

The game resumes at 11:15 a.m. The resumption of the suspended game and the third game were originally scheduled for 12:15 p.m

Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar was ejected in the first inning for the first time in his career, while second baseman Nolan Gorman scored the club’s only run and played a role in the Orioles scoring their only run before heavy rain ended the game Had to interrupt at 8:09 p.m.

Extremely early exit for Nootbaar

Nootbaar, who started the game in right field and batted second in the lineup, had just one hit in the game. Home plate umpire Mike Estabrook ejected Nootbaar before the end of the first inning.

Nootbaar, who had a hit in 10 of his previous 13 starts, struck out what was called a third strike after a four-pitch at-bat in the bottom of the first inning. The pitch appeared to have been inside outside the plate, although Lynn had also benefited from a generous strike zone early in the first inning.

After the third strike, Nootbaar had a brief exchange with Estabrook before heading to the dugout. Then, two pitches into the ensuing at-bat with Paul Goldschmidt at the plate, Estabrook threw Nootbaar out of the game. Nootbaar stormed out of the dugout toward home plate and had another face-to-face exchange with Estabrook, as well as an interaction with third baseman umpire and crew chief Laz Diaz, before Cardinals manager Daniel Descalso pulled Nootbaar back to the dugout while manager Oli Marmol argued with Estabrook.

Cardinals enter in second place

Burleson got the Cardinals’ first hit of the game with one out in the second inning, a single to center field. He moved to second base after a groundout to second base by Ivan Herrera.

With Burleson in scoring position and two outs, Gorman ripped a first-pitch fastball to center field in left for a double. Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins crashed into the outfield wall to make a catch.

Before that double, Gorman had been 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position and two outs this season.

A mistake at an inopportune time

With thunderstorms approaching and the game approaching the five-inning limit to be considered an official game, the Cardinals held a 1-0 lead.

Lynn retired the first two batters of the fifth inning with a strikeout and a fly ball to center field. However, third batter Kyle Stowers hit the ball sharply toward second base.

Gorman passed the ball to his glove side on an intermediate bounce, but was unable to pull it in. Stowers advanced to second base on the two-base error inflicted on Gorman.

With two outs and a runner on second, Jorge Mateo doubled to left field, drove in Stowers, and tied the score at 1-1.

Gorman’s error gave the Cardinals a failure in eight straight games. This was the first time since August 21st. February 27, 2022 that the Cardinals have committed an error in eight straight games.

Donovan takes over the hot corner

Brendan Donovan made his third start at third base this season. He started there in the second game of a doubleheader on April 30 in Detroit, and he also started there on May 12 in Milwaukee. He also moved to third base late in the April 7 and 23 games.

So far this season, Donovan has started games at left field (32), second base (six), designated hitter (five) and third base (three). In 2022, when Donovan won a National League Gold Glove Award as a utility player, he started at first base, second base, third base, shortstop, left field, right field and designated hitter.

Donovan was batting .228 with a .311 on-base percentage through the end of April. His performance at the plate has increased recently. He started the evening with an eight-game winning streak. During that streak, he had batted .333 and posted a .421 on-base percentage.
