WESTBOROUGH – After budget and advertising plans received the green light at town meeting, the Westborough Police Department is preparing for these changes beginning July 1.

Under the new plans, the department will have a new rank – corporal – as well as a patrol lieutenant.

According to Police Chief Todd Minardi, the alignment will help provide more supervisory-level positions and reduce overtime.

“We’re waiting for July 1,” he said.

Meanwhile, the department announced several promotions as well as a new officer.

During a recent ceremony at City Hall, Greg Schipporeit and Todd Rossi were promoted to lieutenant, and Chris Tryanor and Jonathan Hale were promoted to sergeant.

New patch

With the uniform change from winter to spring/summer comes a new patch.

The patch, designed by Officer Tom Tepper, features the City Hall tower on an American flag.

Unveiled earlier this year, Minardi used money from police equipment and asset forfeiture budgets to have the patch made and sewn onto uniforms.

Westborough Police also recently partnered with Spectrum and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office to help those dealing with drug overdoses.

Through the Post Overdose Recovery Team, officers help connect overdose victims with resources and aftercare.

“We’ve had some success with the program so far,” Minardi said.
