Cody recognized for his service to Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper

Dawn Cody of Wheatfield received the Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper Volunteer of the Year award at BNW’s Emerald Evening 35th Anniversary Gala, held May 21.

A press release stated: “Dawn has volunteered with BN Waterkeeper for 25 years. She focuses her involvement primarily in Niagara County. Each year she captains a shoreline sweep to places such as LaSalle Waterfront Park, Gill Creek Park, Fort Niagara State Park or Stella Niagara Preserve. This annual event, held in April each year, attracts more than 2,000 volunteers to the Niagara watershed.

“Other Niagara County BN Waterkeeper projects supported by Dawn are Living Shoreline Restoration in Hyde Park and Tree Planting/Riparian Area Restoration along Gill Creek in Niagara Falls; the removal of invasive plants in the Stella Niagara Reserve; and more recently, the Cayuga Creek Stream and Floodplain Project. The Cayuga Creek Project is the only project of its kind in New York State, aimed at mitigating flooding through canal reconstruction.

“Dawn is also a volunteer ambassador for Waterkeeper and can be found at community events speaking on topics ranging from safe fish eating to preventing shoreline erosion.
