Man arrested after setting fire to home in Logan neighborhood

Marlon Laffoon is charged with first-degree arson, residential burglary, third-degree assault, obstructing public order, resisting public order and third-degree larceny from a building.

SPOKANE, Wash. – A man was arrested Tuesday morning after he reportedly broke into a home in the Logan neighborhood and set it on fire.

The Spokane Police Department (SPD) responded to a burglary at a home on East Augusta Avenue just before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to SPD, the man woke up at home to find that his living room had been searched and the suspect was still in his house.

After police confirmed no one else was home, they asked the suspect to show up and surrender. According to police, the suspect, 32-year-old Marlon Laffoon, appeared through a window, yelled at officers and did not comply with officers’ requests to surrender.

Police said they began searching the home when they smelled smoke and saw flames coming from the upstairs bedroom. According to the SPD, they assumed that Laffoon was hiding in the room where the flames could be seen under the bedroom door. Officers struggled to open the door as the suspect tried to keep it closed.

According to the SPD, after entering the room, Laffoon continued to behave unruly and attempted to injure the canine team sent out to arrest him. According to police, officers managed to arrest Laffoon and he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

At the hospital, police said the suspect spit on a doctor.

Laffon was subsequently booked into the Spokane County Jail where he is charged with first-degree arson, residential burglary, third-degree assault, obstructing governmental authority, resisting governmental authority and third-degree larceny from a building.

Laffoon was scheduled to appear in court today but was reportedly ill. His appearance has been postponed to Wednesday.
