Man dies and driver arrested after ‘tragic incident’

A man in his 50s has died after being hit by a car in Swindon.

Officers were called to the incident on Upham Road at the junction with South View Avenue at around 5.40pm BST on Monday.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle, a man in his thirties, was arrested. He was taken into custody for questioning.

Det Supt Charlotte Tucker, of Wiltshire Police, said: “This is a tragic incident where a man has died in a collision with a car. Our thoughts are with his family at this devastating time.”

She added that police presence in the area would be increased to “reassure the population.”

Officers have appealed for any witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.
