Shootings in Chicago this weekend: Police say at least 71 people were shot and 9 killed in citywide gun violence from Friday to Monday

CHICAGO (WLS) — The victims of this weekend’s shooting range in age from 13 to 57 and come from different parts of the city. The violence has prompted some to look for new solutions.

Following the shocking number of shootings over the weekend, residents of South Lawndale met with police on Monday.

From Friday evening to Monday morning, at least 71 people were shot and nine of them killed across the city, police said.

“Seventy people shot is 70 too many. The fact is, we still have a lot of work to do. We are making progress, but there is still a lot of work to be done,” said Mike Rodriguez, mayor of the 22nd district.

At least two dozen people were shot in a five-hour period between midnight and 5 a.m. on Monday.

Five of them were shot in West Humboldt Park after a large crowd gathered at a gas station.

The shots caused people to flee and there was chaos, which was recorded by surveillance cameras.

About an hour later, at least seven people were shot in a shooting near 62nd Street and Winchester in West Englewood.

“There were a lot of them. I know that. It was ‘bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.’ And then there were a couple more gunshots,” said resident Mary Retta Beamon Robinson.

Nearby, 17th District Councilman David Moore has had enough.

He says he started camping Friday night on 73rd Place between Ada and Racine, a block he describes as an open-air drug market.

His stay, which he documented on Facebook Live, was interrupted by gunshots nearby on Saturday evening.

Moore says no one was hit.

“We need to take the handcuffs off the police,” Moore said. “We can’t take away the tools from the CPD, and I urge this administration not to do that. That’s the bottom line.”

Moore says he plans to stay on the block until police come up with a clear strategy to stop drug trafficking there.

Other weekend shoots

Three people were shot, one fatally, on the South Side early Sunday, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 4500 block of South Evans Avenue in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

A 35-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Another 38-year-old man was shot in the chest and taken to the same hospital in critical condition.

A 26-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the buttocks was also taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Police believe several gunmen fired shots at the victims before fleeing the scene.

No one is in custody and Area One detectives are investigating.

Hours later, two people were killed in a shooting on the southwest side, police said.

Police said the shooting occurred shortly after 5 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 25th Street in the Little Village neighborhood.

A 26-year-old man was found unconscious in a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the temple, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Another victim, in which only the male perpetrator was identified, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His age was not immediately known.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.

Detectives from Area Four are investigating. Police did not initially provide any further information.

According to Chicago police, two separate fatal shootings occurred on the same block on the Far South Side on Sunday, just hours apart.

A man was shot and killed in West Pullman early Sunday.

The victim, a man between the ages of 35 and 40, was shot around 2:32 a.m. in the 11500 block of South La Salle Street, Chicago police said.

His death was pronounced at the scene.

About 13 hours later, two men were shot, one fatally, in West Pullman. The two men were also in the 11500 block of South La Salle Street around 3:20 p.m. when they were approached by someone who fired shots in their direction, Chicago police said.

A 34-year-old man was struck multiple times and taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The other man, 59, also suffered numerous gunshot wounds and is in serious condition in the same hospital, police said.

No arrests have been reported in either case. Police have not said whether the two shootings are connected. Area Two detectives are investigating.

On Sunday at around 9:43 p.m., a 34-year-old woman was shot in the face while sitting in a car in the 200 block of East 31st Street.

The bullet went through the windshield and hit the woman. She was taken to hospital in serious condition.

On Saturday evening, a rideshare driver was shot and became the victim of a carjacking on the city’s West Side, police said.

Police said it happened shortly after 9 p.m. in the 200 block of North Latrobe Avenue in the South Austin neighborhood.

A 49-year-old man was offering a ride when someone entered his vehicle through the back door, pointed a gun at him and ordered him to exit the vehicle, police reported.

According to police, the driver complied, but the perpetrator, who was only a man, shot him in the leg anyway. The suspect then fled the scene in the victim’s gray sedan.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he is listed in good condition. No one is in custody and Area Four Detectives are investigating.

Within five hours on Friday night, a series of shootings occurred, all on the city’s West Side.

Among those killed in the violence was a 13-year-old boy.

According to police, the boy was shot shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday night while standing on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of South Independence Boulevard in the Lawndale community.

He died at Stroger Hospital, police said.

Less than two hours later, a 34-year-old man was shot just after 10 p.m. in West Garfield Park while driving on the 4300 block of West Monroe Street.

According to police, the man then rammed several parked cars. The man was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in serious condition.

About 20 minutes later, a 49-year-old woman, a 33-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man were shot in a backyard in the 500 block of North Laramie in South Austin.

According to CPD, the 33-year-old woman is in critical condition at Stroger Hospital, while the others are in good condition.

Four other people are recovering after similar shootings early Saturday on the West Side.

According to CPD, one is in serious condition while three others are in good condition.

Shortly after noon on Saturday, two men were shot in the Englewood neighborhood on the south side.

Police said the victims were in the 7000 block of South Green Street when a vehicle approached them and someone inside the vehicle opened fire.

The men went to a hospital where they were said to be in good condition.

A man was killed and a woman injured in a shooting Saturday in Belmont Cragin on the Northwest Side.

The two were in a car in the 3000 block of North Cicero Avenue around 2:30 a.m. when someone in another car fired shots after stopping next to them, Chicago police said.

The 30-year-old man and 31-year-old woman were both injured and drove themselves to Community First Medical Center, where the man was pronounced dead and the woman was in critical condition, police said.

No arrests were reported.

Last weekend, at least 33 people were shot in gun violence across the city, five of them fatally, police said.
