A 33-year-old Kodiak man died Friday night when he was struck by a car while riding a dirt bike in the community of Chiniak, Alaska State Police said.

Culen Griffin was struck by a vehicle on Chiniak Highway around 10:40 p.m. Friday, police said. Griffin was wearing a helmet, police spokesman John Dougherty said Monday. It is legal to ride a registered dirt bike on the road, Dougherty said.

Griffin was unresponsive when emergency responders arrived and died at the scene, police said. Further information about the incident was not immediately available.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing and no charges have been filed as of Monday afternoon, Dougherty said. The state medical examiner’s office is currently conducting an autopsy.

The 42-mile-long Chiniak Highway connects the community of Chiniak on Kodiak Island with the city of Kodiak.
