“They should have arrested him”; Video shows aggressive traffic incident in Lehi

LEHI — Lehi police are investigating a possible case of road rage after a couple was struck from behind and pushed through a busy intersection on Timpanogos Highway.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon as Kyle Rummens and his wife were on their way to a wedding. The couple had just left their home in Lehi and were driving on Triumph Boulevard when they noticed a dark-colored truck aggressively driving through traffic behind them.

“I noticed this guy in our rearview mirror and noticed that he was very agitated. I could tell he was annoyed by the traffic and wanted to swerve,” Rummens said. “His speed was constantly changing, he was speeding up, slowing down, as if he was almost swerving on the road to make room.”

Rummens said when he stopped at the traffic light on State Route 92, the truck was behind him, and when he began to accelerate on the green light, the truck struck him from behind.

“He came really close and rammed us, he pushed our car a good 30 metres through the intersection,” he said. “When he started pushing and kept pushing our car, my wife and I got scared, like this guy was intentionally trying to hurt us? We were definitely scared.”

The entire collision, including the moment the truck detached from his bumper and sped away, was captured by the Tesla’s security cameras. Rummens and his wife immediately called 911, and Lehi police tracked down the driver and charged him with failing to stay at the scene of the accident.

“I was expecting a call that they arrested him. What he did – it feels like they should have arrested him,” Rummens said. “I think assault is a more accurate description of what happened.”

Lehi police said the incident remains under investigation and the case will be forwarded to the Utah County Attorney’s Office for review for road rage and more serious charges.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t the first time he did this, and it won’t be the last,” Rummens said. “I hope there is justice and that his actions have real consequences so that this doesn’t happen to more people.”

Utah’s new law against road rage goes into effect on July 1. Drivers who are guilty of road rage will face higher fines and harsher penalties. Drivers who have previously been aggressive will face harsher penalties and up to 15 years in prison.
