Stray buffalo attack: Stray buffalo attacks pedestrian | News from Chennai

Chennai: In yet another stray cattle attack, this time in Thiruvottiyur, an untethered buffalo on Sunday attacked a woman pedestrian, throwing her in the air and dragging her for about 50 metres after her sari got caught in its horn. At least two bystanders who tried to rescue the woman were also injured while the animal ran around and damaged parked two-wheelers. A CCTV clip of the attack went viral on social media, sparking outrage at the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for its inaction in curbing stray cattle. On Monday, GCC officials seized the buffalo. Police said the injured woman, Madhumathi, 33, a resident of Hamsa Thottam Second Street in Thiruvottiyur, was walking along the road to visit a relative when the buffalo attacked her. The CCTV footage shows that the woman, who was crossing the road, panicked and stood motionless when the animal attacked her. When she fell, it hit her again. This time, her sari got caught in the animal’s horn. When she screamed for help, onlookers came to her rescue and chased the buffalo away. The woman suffered severe bruises and a broken leg. Police said two other people, including Chandrasekar, who runs an ironing shop in the neighbourhood, were injured while trying to rescue Madhumathi. More than 10 parked bikes were damaged in the scuffle. Madhumathi and Chandrasekar were admitted to a private hospital while another injured man was treated as an outpatient. Police have registered a case. GCC Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan said, “Nobody has come forward to claim ownership of the buffalo. Once the owner is identified, GCC will file a complaint against the person.”
