Oklahoma man dies after falling into Wabash River

WABASH COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – An Oklahoma man drove off the road and fell into the Wabash River early Monday afternoon.

According to the Wabash County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch was notified around 11:30 p.m. Monday of a vehicle lying on its side in the Wabash River near Old 24 East or Lagro Road.


When officers arrived on scene, they found a vehicle traveling westbound when it crossed both lanes of traffic and veered off the river bank. The vehicle came to rest on its driver’s side in the Wabash River.

The driver of the vehicle, 47-year-old James Smith of Crowder, Oklahoma, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Wabash County Coroner.

The cause of the accident is unclear. The accident remains under investigation.
