Funeral for deceased Minneapolis police officer in New Haven

The funeral of the late Minneapolis police officer and New Haven native Jamal Mitchell took place on Monday.

Family, friends and members of the Minneapolis Police Department gathered for the memorial service at Hillhouse High School.

“I’ve said this since the day Jamal died, and I’ll say this every day for the rest of my life: Jamal Mitchell embodies everything that’s good about the men and women of the Minneapolis Police Department and the men and women who serve in the police profession,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.

Mitchell was responding to a call of gunfire when he was ambushed and shot. He died after assisting a man who later shot him.

Last month, Mitchell was responding to a 911 call in Whittier, Minneapolis, when he was ambushed and shot.

According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, he was trying to help a man on the street, later identified as Mustafa Mohamed, when the man shot him.

Officer Mitchell will be buried in a private ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery.
