JJ Ricean 18-year-old kite foil racing star, has died in a tragic accident.

He should compete in the Olympic Games 2024 in Paris this summer, after finishing 8th at the Sail Sydney event late last year. JJwho was born in the United States but lived in Tonga and considered himself a Tongan citizen, was scheduled to represent the country at the Games.

His father confirmed the cause of death to a local newspaper.

He was freediving from a boat last weekend and is believed to have suffered a “shallow water blackout,” the news source reported. He was found on the sea floor and resuscitation attempts failed.
