Impact of immigration policy on security

A man has been arrested for the rape and murder of a Maryland mother of five in 2023 – and as if his crime wasn’t bad enough, here’s the catch: He should never have been allowed into the country in the first place.

Police arrested 23-year-old Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, last Friday and charged him with the rape and murder of Rachel Morin, who disappeared in early August last year after walking the Ma & Pa Trail in Harford County, Maryland. Morin’s body was found the next day in a drainage ditch off the trail. She had been sexually assaulted and killed.

Police were able to link the crime to Hernandez because DNA evidence was found at the crime scene. This also linked him to a 2023 burglary in Los Angeles in which he allegedly attacked a 9-year-old girl. Authorities arrested him in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said Hernandez entered the country illegally in 2023, just months after he reportedly murdered another young woman in El Salvador.

“As far as I know, this suspect, this monster, fled illegally to the United States after committing the brutal murder of a young woman in El Salvador a month earlier, in January 2023. Once in our country, he – probably encouraged by his anonymity – brutally attacked a 9-year-old girl and her mother during a break-in in Los Angeles in March 2023,” Gahler said at a press conference this weekend.

“I want to address these comments now to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and to every member in both houses of Congress,” he continued. “Here in Harford County, we are 1,800 miles from the southern border and American citizens are not safe because of failed immigration policies. This is the second time in just two years that an innocent Harford County woman has lost her life at the hands of a criminal who was in our country illegally.”

This is the second illegal immigrant from El Salvador recently arrested for murder in Harford County. In January, a 17-year-old illegal immigrant was arrested and charged with the murder of 20-year-old local woman Kayla Hamilton.
