Detectives continue to investigate fatal hit-and-run crash in Takoma Park; updated description of suspect vehicle released


For immediate release: Monday, June 17, 2024

At approximately 1:17 a.m., officers from the Takoma Park Police Department and the Montgomery County Fire Department responded to the 1100 block of University Boulevard East for a report of a man lying in the street with head injuries.

Officers found the victim in the eastbound lanes of University Boulevard East and transported him to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The deceased was identified as 42-year-old Candido Noe Rojas Rojas of Takoma Park.

The Office of the Medical Examiner in Washington, DC performed an autopsy and concluded that the victim’s injuries were likely caused by a vehicle.

Detectives’ preliminary investigation has revealed that a westbound vehicle struck the pedestrian and fled the scene on Lebanon Street toward Prince George’s County.

After reviewing additional video evidence, investigators have received a more detailed description of the suspect’s vehicle. It is believed to be a dark colored, possibly black, 2014-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Any damage to the vehicle is on the left side and appears to be minor.
