San Angelo Police Chief Election Results, Saturday, June 15, 2024

On the second attempt, Travis Griffith succeeded: He will exchange his title of sergeant for that of chief of the San Angelo Police Department.

Griffith defeated Lt. Mike Hernandez in Saturday’s runoff election for chief, receiving 435 more votes and a 5.2% lead. The heated runoff drew more voters to the polls than the May 4 election.

Both candidates expressed satisfaction after the Tom Green County Election Office announced the results of the battle for the position of San Angelo’s top police officer on Saturday evening.

Griffith reacts

“My heart is full as I write this message and express my deepest gratitude to all of you,” Griffith said in a 1:10 a.m. Facebook post on his campaign page. “Your support and belief in me played a critical role in our victory in this election.”

He also thanked Hernandez and his team for their efforts in the race.

“This is a difficult job that is very challenging and stressful. I want to see our department and our community get better,” Griffith said.

He said he was excited and looking forward to “working on creating a better future for our community.”

Hernandez reacts

Hernandez thanked his campaign supporters on Saturday evening.

“Although we did not win, your efforts were invaluable and are deeply appreciated,” he said in a post on his Facebook campaign page at 11:04 p.m. Saturday.

He congratulated the city’s new police chief.

“I will pray for his success in this critical role and hope that he will lead with wisdom and justice for the good of our community,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez and Griffith were the vote-getters in the May 4 election, with Hernandez leading by 199 votes. The third candidate, Christopher Cimino, received only a small percentage of the vote. None of the three candidates received 50% plus one vote, leading to a runoff election between Hernandez and Griffith on Saturday.

Here’s a look at the results from Saturday’s election in San Angelo. Election Day results are considered unofficial until they are counted.

Police Chief

Travis Griffith: 4,408 (52.6%)

Mike Hernandez: 3,973 (47.4%)

The unofficial totals listed above are counted ballots from the county election office’s provisional vote.

As of Saturday evening, election officials estimated that 403 mail-in ballots had not been returned or were still awaiting voters’ decisions. An estimated 22 provisional ballots were expected. These numbers typically change and could be added to the final count.

A fight that attracted more voters

Hernandez and Griffith waged a hard-fought campaign in the run-up to Saturday’s runoff election, a race that generated so much public interest that it drew 1,742 more voters than the May 4 race.
