A 24-year-old motorcyclist died Friday afternoon when he lost control of his speeding motorcycle and plunged off the road into a drainage ditch in Ramona, a California Highway Patrol official said.

The man was riding his 2015 Triumph motorcycle south on Third Street north of G Street around 2:30 p.m. when he lost control of the motorcycle, which overturned, CHP Officer Jared Grieshaber said. He was thrown from the motorcycle and the motorcycle slid off the east side of the road into a ditch of rocks and concrete.

The injured man, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries, Grieshaber said.

Investigators are trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident, Grieshaber said.

The name of the deceased man was not disclosed.
