1 dead, 2 injured in rollover crash on I-5 near Camp Pendleton – San Diego Union-Tribune

A 20-year-old driver was killed and two passengers injured in a car crash on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton early Saturday morning, a California Highway Patrol official said.

The man was driving north on I-5, just south of Las Pulgas Road, around 5:45 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, his BMW coupe drifted left into the center barrier. The car then veered right again, where it overturned and crashed into a phone booth and a barbed wire fence, CHP Officer Hunter Gerber said in a news release.

The driver, a resident of Mount Vernon, Washington, died in the crash. His name was not released.

A 21-year-old Oceanside man who was a passenger in the car suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, a 19-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

Investigators are trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision; the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or has information is asked to contact the CHP office in Oceanside at (760) 643-3400.
