Important update on the case: Man died in terrible accident due to electric shock in hot tub while on vacation

There was an update on a case in which a man suffered a horrific electrocution in a hot tub while on vacation and died.

Jorge Guillen of Texas, USA, was only 43 years old when he died from the effects of an “electrical discharge” while relaxing in a hot tub during his vacation at a resort in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, according to local authorities.

His wife, 35-year-old Lizzette Zambrano, was also taken to hospital after the incident. She jumped into the water to save him, but was caught in the current and sucked in as well.

According to authorities in the state of Sonora, the couple were in the hot tub of the private resort shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday (June 11).

As the couple went down to watch the sunset together, Jorge simply put his foot in the hot tub when he fell into an electrical circuit and became trapped underwater.

When his wife was also caught in the water, another guest managed to save her. Unfortunately, the help was too late and too little for her husband, as other people were electrocuted with poles and metal tools while trying to help him.

Eyewitnesses noticed that the couple was not moving in the hot tub, called emergency services and attempted resuscitation, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

A video of the incident is making the rounds on social media and in Mexican media, showing crowds gathering around the hot tub, audibly screaming for “help” while someone performs CPR on a person lying on the ground.

But now, six days after the tragic incident, Lizzette Zambrano, the wife of the deceased, issued an update.

It was reported that a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit was filed in the couple’s hometown of El Paso, Texas.

The lawsuit alleges that it took resort staff 10 minutes to respond and that the hotel failed to warn guests of the dangers.

Tej Paranjpe, an attorney with Houston-based PMR Law, which is handling the case, said the incident was “terrifying.”

He also said: “There was not a single employee who did anything while Jorge was being repeatedly shocked underwater.”

Ten minutes after ten minutes of cries for help, the manager on duty arrived and retrieved Jorge’s body from the bottom of the hot tub, even though he was already dead.

Lizzete was released from a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday after being flown there by helicopter following the incident last week.

Mexican prosecutors in the state said those in charge of the case were investigating “the cause of the blackout” and would conduct on-site visits in the coming days.

Hot tub electrocutions due to faulty lights and pumps are rare, but vigilance is still needed to ensure equipment is properly maintained, experts say.

Since the tragic incident, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with medical costs. The accompanying post reads: “Our best friends have experienced a terrible accident.

“Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends.

“The love they shared was eternal. We ask for your help in bringing him home and assisting with medical expenses for her.”

At the time of writing, GoFundMe had raised $54,000 (£42,600) of its $60,000 (£47,300) goal.

The LADbible Group has contacted Sonoran Sea Resort for comment.
