Man hospitalized with serious injuries after being attacked by dog while jogging

A man was hospitalized in County Donegal on Sunday after being attacked by a dog belonging to a banned breed.

The man was jogging on the greenway between the villages of Muff and Quigley’s Point on the Inishowen Peninsula when he was attacked by the dog shortly after midday.

The dog, probably a Rottweiler, was being walked on a leash by its owner at the time.

At the time of the attack, the animal was not wearing a muzzle.

It managed to free itself from its owner and chase the man before biting him several times on the leg.

The victim, a man in his twenties, was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry where he received emergency treatment.

It is believed that Gardaí had identified the dog at the centre of the incident by Monday morning.

Officials have now launched an investigation into the incident.

Local district councillor Terry Crossan said he was appalled by the attack.

He said people must take full responsibility for their dogs.

“I would like to pay particular tribute to the Gardaí for the way they handled this situation and brought it under control once they recognised the seriousness of the incident.

“This man was lucky to escape, although his injuries are very serious.

“If it had been a child, the consequences could have been much worse and it’s not even worth thinking about,” he said.

The attack came less than two weeks after a 23-year-old woman was killed in a dog attack in County Limerick.

Nicole Morey died after being bitten to death by her own large, bully dog as she entered her home after a birthday party.

The tragedy has reignited the debate about dangerous dog breeds and the possibility of banning certain breeds in Ireland.

Last week, Taoiseach Simon Harris promised to push for a ban on XL bully dogs and other dangerous dog breeds following Ms Morey’s death.

The government is currently consulting with the Attorney General about banning this breed.

Earlier this month, a pit bull terrier that attacked two people in a house in a suburb of Cork City was shot dead by armed Gardaí.
