Police investigate after man attacked by mob of youths in Hendon

Police are investigating reports that a Jewish man was attacked by a mob of youths in Hendon on Friday.

Video footage of the incident shared by the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism on Twitter/X shows a group of teenagers running after a man on Brent Street.

A citizen reported to the Campaign Against Anti-Semitism that one of the teenagers in the group was heard shouting anti-Semitic insults.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers on proactive patrol encountered an altercation between a group of youths on Brent Street on Friday 14 June.

A police statement said: “They moved in to disperse the group and arrested a teenager on suspicion of assault. There were no reports of serious injuries.”

“We are aware of the video circulating on the Internet and the assumption that the officers did not intervene. This is not true and further investigations are ongoing.”

“We have spoken to the victim. The investigation is still in its early stages, but we are still unbiased as to the motive.

“We have also spoken to trusted partners in the Jewish community and will remain in contact as the investigation progresses.”

The Campaign Against Anti-Semitism said on Twitter/X: “These incidents are not isolated. The atmosphere on our streets, campuses and even schools is becoming increasingly dangerous and inflammatory.”

“We have been warning for months about where this is leading. The next government must act and demand decisive action from the police, universities, schools and all those who fail to ensure the safety of Jewish citizens.”

The London Jewish Forum said it was “aware of reports of an alleged anti-Semitic incident in Hendon today. Promoting safety and community cohesion remains one of our priorities and we are in close contact with the relevant authorities and agencies.”
