FSSAI revokes ice cream maker’s license after Mumbai doctor finds human finger in cone | Pune News

NEW DELHI: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the license of a Pune-based ice cream manufacturer after a Mumbai-based doctor allegedly found a human finger in an ice cream cone on Wednesday. The 26-year-old doctor filed a complaint following which the FSSAI suspended the manufacturer’s license pending further investigation.

“The premises of the ice cream manufacturer were inspected by a team from the Western Region Office of FSSAI and its license was suspended,” the FSSAI said in a reply to ANI.

The FSSAI confirmed that the manufacturer, based in Indapur, Pune, holds a central license. The food safety regulator has collected samples from the seller’s location for further analysis, while the state FDA has also inspected the seller’s location in Mumbai and collected samples from the batch in question. However, the forensic laboratory report is still pending.

Meanwhile, the Malad police have launched an investigation into the incident at Fortune Dairy. Their aim is to ascertain the date of manufacture of the ice cream batch, the manufacturing process and any mishaps that might have occurred during production.

The supply chain of the ice cream could be traced from Fortune Dairy in Indapur to a warehouse in Hadapsar, then to Sakinaka, Bhiwandi and finally to a warehouse in Malad, from where it was delivered to Dr Ferrao’s residence.

In response to the incident, ice cream brand Yummo has stopped production at the third-party facility and isolated the affected product.
