Man arrested for reporting alleged sexual abuse of his wife by NIS officer is released on bail

CP Auwal Mohammed

A high court in Bauchi State has granted bail to Samaila Yusuf, who was arrested and charged with kidnapping after he reported a Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officer, Sani Mua’zu, for sexually abusing his wife.

Yusuf was sentenced to 11 days in prison after he reported to Bauchi police that he caught Mua’zu sexually abusing his wife in the presence of his two children.

Meanwhile, the police had said that they had received a complaint against the complainant for kidnapping. However, Justice L. Umar ruled in the case that Yusuf was released on bail under Order XV Rule 4 of the Fundamental Human Rights (Enforcement Procedures) Rules 2009 under Section 45 of the 1999 Constitution.

The judge fixed February 29 as the date for hearing the application. The Country Director of the Organization for African Child Development and Human Rights Protection, Muhammad Alkassim, in his reaction, said the court was moved to get justice and enforce the section of the Constitution against the violation of Yusuf’s rights in the suit numbered BA/82M/2024.

Alkassim praised the court for granting bail to Yusuf, who has now regained his freedom. He called on human rights groups to come to the woman’s aid and persuade the police to conduct a proper investigation into the rape allegation.
