Carteret, NJ murder suspect arrested with gun, court documents say

CARTERET – When a Washington state man was arrested by police Wednesday after a day-long manhunt for the gunman who shot one woman and seriously injured another, he was found armed with a 9 mm pistol for which he did not have a permit and an extended magazine full of bullets, court records show.

According to court documents, a search of 19-year-old Gaurav Gill after his arrest found a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm pistol in his waistband and an extended magazine of 9mm cartridges in his front pocket. The criminal complaint states that Gill did not have a permit to carry the weapon.

Gill was charged with murder, attempted murder and weapons offenses in connection with the shooting of two women Wednesday morning on Roosevelt Avenue in West Carteret. A 29-year-old Carteret woman, identified as Jasvir Kaur, died from her injuries, while a 20-year-old Carteret woman is hospitalized in critical condition, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.

The criminal complaint states that Kaur was shot several times and the other woman was shot at least once with a pistol.

According to court documents, Carteret police responded to Roosevelt Avenue on June 12 after receiving a report that two women had been shot. The victims were taken to different hospitals and one of the victims was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

A surveillance camera showed a man wearing a black hoodie, black pants and white sneakers fleeing after the shooting, court documents show.

The same person was seen on surveillance camera pulling a gun, which discharged a 9mm cartridge that was recovered. According to court documents, the cartridge was the same caliber as the one recovered at the shooting scene.

Video surveillance also showed the same person removing the black hoodie, revealing a white T-shirt, and leaving the hoodie on the ground, which was then recovered. Additional surveillance footage showed the same man fleeing the area wearing the same clothing, now with a sticker on the front of the white T-shirt, court documents say.
