Train accident in West Bengal LIVE: After at least 15 people were killed and hundreds of passengers injured in a serious train accident in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that she would visit the accident site to get an overview of the relief efforts.

“The driver and co-driver of the goods train and the conductor of the Kanchenjunga Express train were killed in the accident,” said Jaya Varma Sinha, chairman and CEO of the railway company.

“Prima facie, human error is the cause. Early indications suggest that this is a case of signal ignorance. Kavach needs to be spread, which is planned for West Bengal,” Sinha added.

“The Kanchenjunga Express, which was heading towards Sealdah, met with an accident… There are no reports of casualties, but some people have sustained serious injuries… The Government of India, the Prime Minister, the Railway Minister and our Chief Minister are taking stock of the situation,” Tripura Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said in the first few hours after the accident.
