Burn permits are being suspended in several Northern California counties as the active fire season continues

(FOX40.COM) — As California grapples with an active fire season, several Northern California counties have suspended permits for outdoor burning fires in residential areas starting Monday, June 17.

The Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit and the Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the affected areas include Alpine, Amador, El Dorado, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Nevada, Yuba, Placer and Sierra counties.

Cal Fire Amador said the new fire permit restrictions are in addition to those implemented June 10 in other areas of Amador and El Dorado counties.

“This suspension will take effect at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2024, and prohibits the outdoor burning of yard waste such as branches and leaves in residential areas,” Cal Fire said.

It continues: “While outdoor burning of yard waste by homeowners is no longer permitted, CAL FIRE is asking residents to take the extra time to ensure they are prepared for wildfires by maintaining a minimum distance of 100 feet around each home and building on their property and being prepared to evacuate in the event of an emergency.”

The announcement comes as Northern California grapples with an active fire season, including a recent 800-acre fire in Sacramento, a 1,000-acre fire in Butte County and a 14,000-acre fire in San Joaquin County before July 1.

Cal Fire offers Californians some tips on how to prepare their homes and property for fires:

  • Remove all dead and/or dying vegetation within 30 meters of all buildings.
  • Landscape with fire-resistant plants and non-combustible ground covers.
  • Find alternative ways to dispose of landscape waste, such as chipping it or transporting it to a biomass or green waste facility.
