Spare-the-Air warning issued for parts of Bay Area due to smoke from Point Fire – NBC Bay Area

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a “Spare the Air” warning for parts of the Bay Area for Sunday night and Monday due to wildfire smoke from the Point Fire in northern Sonoma County.

According to the aviation authority, smoke from the 900-acre fire will affect parts of North Bay and Contra Costa County. Smoky, hazy skies may occur and the smell of smoke is possible. They added that wood burning is prohibited.

Air quality may be moderate to unhealthy for people sensitive to fine particulate matter. Residents who belong to a sensitive group should stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed, the air district said.

An evacuation order for the area was expanded to include all residents of the SON-2E2 zone in Dry Creek Valley, the sheriff’s office said at 4:15 p.m., as the Point Fire spread.

In this zone, evacuation orders are in effect north and east of Chemise Road, south of Stewart’s Point-Skaggs Springs Road, and west of Dry Creek.

People in these areas should evacuate “calmly and quickly.” Emergency crews are going door to door to help, the sheriff’s office said.

An evacuation warning is in effect for zone SON-2E3, also in the Dry Creek Valley: north of Mill Creek Road, south of Chemise Road, east of Wallace Creek Road and west of Dry Creek in this zone.

By 8:30 p.m., the Point Fire had expanded to 900 acres and was 15% contained.
