Woman seriously injured in mysterious skydiving incident

A 22-year-old woman was seriously injured in a mysterious skydiving incident in Tooele.

John Smith of the North Tooele Fire District said the woman, an experienced diver, was diving alone Sunday afternoon.

The parachute opened, there was no mechanical failure and when officers arrived on the scene, the woman was conscious and breathing but had some type of traumatic injury, Smith said.

Officials believed the woman might have been electrocuted, but there were no visible injuries to suggest that. She was trapped against a building that had insulated power lines attached to it, Smith said.

Smith said officials were unsure if she touched the wires, but the most likely reason for the injury was that she struck an airborne object.

The woman was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Salt Lake City in critical condition.
